Appearance.

Mal is tall, well built but not overly so, with tanned and weathered skin that sometimes gives his appearance an older sort of look. He stands firm and proud, with a certain set to his shoulders that lets you know that he certainly thinks he's in charge, even if he doesn't act it or do the best job of it sometimes. He has the sort of shaggy appearance that would lead you to indicate that leaves you surprised when you notice that he's not actually covered in dirt or dust, and doesn't have all kinds of dirt oil and grease under his fingernails. His hair is brown and spiry, and his eyes are brown and surprisingly sharp for a man of his stature. He is usually carrying a weapon, and often feels more naked without his gun than he does when he isn't clothed.

Superpowers.

Mal is human. He has a keen eye for shooting, great leadership abilities, and a quaint sense of humour, but doesn't sparkle in the sun has no enhanced abilities beyond those, unless they develop as part of game canon.

About the Character
"May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one."

Mal's history before the Unification War is vague at best, and the number of references he makes to it can be counted on one hand, but in the war itself he was eventually promoted to sergeant because of his natural ability to lead. His ability to keep his team focused, on task, and united in the common goal of overthrowing the Alliance was his greatest strong point - that and his faith that a higher being was watching out for them, somewhere out there.

All that went to hell when stronger forces of the Alliance overpowered the Independents and their world fell apart around them. Many gave in, surrendered to the life the Alliance offered, grudgingly.

Mal was not one of those people. Losing his faith in the all mighty, he and his first officer Zoe set out together on their own to keep moving through the skies, so as not to have to settle down under Alliance rule on a planet somewhere. They procured a ship - a Firefly vessel named Serenity - and used her to smuggle goods across space for buying customers. Occasionally, they took on jobs that were legitimate work, such as renting a shuttle to a registered Companion - usually, they took on jobs that were not.

Their crew grew to five as time wore on. Zoe married the pilot Mal hired, and they found themselves a mechanic who could keep the ship flying using straw and bubblegum, as well as a mercenary who could do their dirty work so long as they paid them. Things were scraping by - getting harder in places, but at least their was food in their mouths.

Things took an interesting turn when - in a typical passenger transport to Boros - Mal discovered that a couple of fugitives that had stowed away on his ship. Situations forced him to make a decision between turning over said fugitives to the Alliance, or running and saving the life of a member of his crew. Mal chose the latter, and forever branded himself and his crew as outlaws.

Time passed, and it became harder and harder to find good work without drawing the Alliance to their attention, and the Alliance was still after his crew with a vengeance. When a scape at the Maidenhead bar put Serenity back onto the radar of an Operative of the Alliance, Mal found his world falling apart around him as just about everyone he'd ever known and worked with who wasn't on his ship was dying around him. He put all his faith and trust in his psychic crewmember and sent his ship on a suicide mission to reveal the truth about what happened on planet Miranda, and the true scopes of the Alliance's treachery.

Not much is known about what happened after that (at least by me - there have been comics / novels written on the subject though, I'm sure). It can be assumed that the worlds fell into at the very least a cold war, and that everyone is far more on guard then they used to be. Mal himself feels like he's back in the war, and is constantly ready to launch back in to battle.

Mal's a natural leader, for the most part. Sometimes it takes him a bit of effort to reclaim his Alpha Dog status, but it's a skill he utilizes without effort, and without question; he knows what it best, and if you don't listen you can get off his ship. That said, he's content enough to let someone else take the reigns if their more knowledgeable in a subject than he is - he will defer to Kaylee if it's a machinery problem, and constantly confide and trust in Zoe in order to make sure that he stays on path.

Mal does his best to keep everyone employed, fed, and warm - but beyond that, he leaves it to people who are less bitter and broken to keep spirits up. He suffers from an all-encompassing feeling of loss and depression which he experienced when he lost the war, and has never been able to shake. He doesn't know who he'd be without it at this point. He will often joke, if told he doesn't smile enough, that he'll smile when the Independents overthrow the Alliance - though that's about as likely as hell freezing over, and he knows it.
